๐Ÿ”— URL Encoder

URL-encode or decode text for safe use in query strings.

Percent-encode a URL or a query string so it survives being passed as a parameter, or decode an escaped URL back into readable text.

How to use the URL Encoder

  1. Paste the URL or the text you want to encode.
  2. Choose Encode or Decode, and switch between component and full-URI mode.
  3. Copy the escaped result.

Why people use it

  • Fixes the classic bug where an ampersand inside a query value silently truncates the parameter.
  • Component mode escapes :, / and ? so a nested URL can be passed as a single value.
  • Decoding turns a wall of percent signs back into something readable.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between encodeURI and encodeURIComponent?

encodeURI leaves the structural characters :, /, ?, &, = and # intact so a whole URL stays a valid URL. encodeURIComponent escapes those too, which is what you want when a URL is being passed as a value inside another URL.

Why do spaces appear as %20 or as +?

%20 is percent-encoding, used anywhere in a URL. The + sign is a separate convention from HTML form encoding in query strings. Both decode to a space, but they are not interchangeable in every context.

Do I need to encode an entire URL?

Usually not. Encode only the parts that carry data, such as a search term or a redirect target, and leave the scheme, host and path separators alone.
