Frequently asked questions
How is binary read?
Each digit is a power of two, counted from right to left. So 1011 is 8 + 0 + 2 + 1, which is 11 in decimal.
What is hexadecimal used for?
It is a compact way to write binary, because one hex digit covers exactly four bits. That is why memory addresses, colour codes and hash digests are usually shown in hex.
Why do Unix file permissions like 755 look like octal?
Permissions are three groups of three bits, and octal represents exactly three bits per digit. So 755 means rwxr-xr-x.
