Tip, total and what each person owes when the bill is split.

Bill Split

Leave the right tip without doing arithmetic at the table. Enter the bill, choose a percentage and say how many people are sharing it; you get the tip, the final total and what each person owes. The quick buttons cover the usual percentages โ€” 10% for counter service, 15% for standard table service, 18โ€“20% for good service in North America, and 25% or more for large groups or exceptional service.

How to use the Tip Calculator

  1. Type the bill amount, before or after tax depending on local custom.
  2. Pick a percentage with a quick button, or type your own.
  3. Set how many people are splitting the bill.
  4. Read the tip, the total and the per-person amount.

Why people use it

  • Splitting a group bill evenly without an argument at the table.
  • Checking a percentage a card machine suggests before you approve it.
  • Working out whether a service charge already on the bill is enough.
  • Travel: tipping norms differ by country, so the local percentage is easy to apply.

Frequently asked questions

Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?

Custom varies. In the United States most guidance suggests tipping on the pre-tax subtotal, though plenty of people tip on the total for simplicity. Either is acceptable and the difference on a normal bill is small.

What if a service charge is already on the bill?

A mandatory service charge usually replaces the tip, and depending on local law the business may keep part or all of it. If a service charge is included, find out whether it reaches the staff before adding anything on top.

How do I split an uneven bill?

Work out the tip on the full bill, add it to the bill, then divide by what each person actually ordered. An even split charged to people who ordered less is the most common source of friction on a group bill.
