64 Base64

Encode and decode Base64. Upload files to encode.

Encode text or a file to Base64, or decode a Base64 string back to its original form. Handles both the standard and URL-safe alphabets.

How to use the Base64

  1. Paste text, or drop a file, into the input box.
  2. Choose Encode or Decode.
  3. Copy the result. File mode also gives you a ready-made data URI to paste into CSS or HTML.

Why people use it

  • File mode produces the data: URI you need to inline a small image without a separate HTTP request.
  • Decodes URL-safe Base64, which uses - and _ instead of + and /, without extra conversion steps.
  • Everything runs locally, so encoding a private key or certificate does not expose it.

Frequently asked questions

What is Base64 actually for?

It represents arbitrary binary data using only 64 printable ASCII characters, so binary can travel safely through systems built for text — email attachments, JSON payloads, data URIs and HTTP basic auth.

Does Base64 compress or encrypt anything?

Neither. It makes data about 33 percent larger and offers no confidentiality at all. Anyone can decode it.

Why does decoded output look like garbage?

You probably decoded binary data such as an image. Switch the output to a download instead of viewing it as text.
