๐ File Checksum
Drop a file to calculate its MD5, SHA-1, and SHA-256 hashes.
Drop a file and compute its MD5, SHA-1 and SHA-256 checksums to confirm it downloaded intact and matches the published hash.
How to use the File Checksum
- Drop the file into the box.
- The tool reads it and computes MD5, SHA-1 and SHA-256.
- Compare the result with the checksum published by the download source.
Why people use it
- A mismatched checksum is the fastest way to separate a truncated or tampered download from a working one.
- Answers whether two files are byte-identical without opening either of them.
- Files are read locally, so you can verify a large archive without uploading gigabytes.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my checksum not match?
Usually a partial download, an interrupted transfer, or the wrong file version. Re-download and check again before assuming tampering. Browsers sometimes serve a slightly different file, such as an HTML error page saved under the right filename.
Which checksum should I compare?
Whichever one the publisher provides. SHA-256 is the modern default. MD5 still detects accidental corruption, but it is not safe against a deliberate collision.
Do large files take long?
The browser streams the file and hashes it locally. A multi-gigabyte disk image takes a while and temporarily uses memory, but there is no upload.
