๏ผ… Percentage

Percent of a number, ratio, and percent change.

X% of Y % ร— = โ€”
X is what % of Y / = โ€”
Change from X to Y โ†’ = โ€”

Work out percentages in any direction: what X percent of Y is, what percentage X is of Y, and the percentage change between two numbers.

How to use the Percentage

  1. Choose the kind of calculation you need.
  2. Enter the two numbers.
  3. The answer appears together with the formula used, so you can check it.

Why people use it

  • Covers the three percentage questions that come up constantly instead of making you reverse-engineer a formula.
  • Shows the working, which makes it obvious when the answer is the opposite of what you expected.
  • Handles the direction trap in percentage change: 100 to 120 is a rise of 20 percent, but 120 back to 100 is a fall of 16.7 percent.

Frequently asked questions

Why is a 20 percent rise not undone by a 20 percent fall?

Because the second percentage applies to a larger base. 100 plus 20 percent is 120, and 120 minus 20 percent is 96. To get back you have to remove 16.7 percent.

What is the difference between percentage points and percent?

A move from 5 percent to 7 percent is a rise of 2 percentage points but a relative increase of 40 percent. Confusing the two is a frequent source of error in reports.

How do I calculate a discount?

Use the 'X percent of Y' mode with the percentage as the discount, then subtract from the original price. The result tells you how much comes off.
