# Hash Generator

Generate SHA hashes from text.

Compute SHA-256, SHA-512, SHA-1 and MD5 digests from any text, entirely inside your browser.

How to use the Hash Generator

  1. Paste or type the text you want to hash.
  2. Every supported digest is computed as you type.
  3. Copy the hex digest you need.

Why people use it

  • Lets you confirm that two strings match without revealing either of them.
  • Handy for generating a deterministic cache key or identifier on the spot.
  • Runs locally, so you can hash a password or a secret without sending it anywhere.

Frequently asked questions

Which hash should I use?

SHA-256 for anything security-related. SHA-1 and MD5 are broken for collision resistance and should only be used to match legacy systems or to detect accidental corruption.

Is hashing the same as encryption?

No. Hashing is one-way and cannot be reversed. Encryption is reversible with a key. A hash gives you integrity, not confidentiality.

Can I use this to store passwords?

Not on its own. A plain hash is vulnerable to rainbow-table and brute-force attacks. Password storage needs a deliberately slow, salted algorithm such as bcrypt, scrypt or Argon2.
