🔤 Slug Generator
Turn a title into a clean, shareable URL slug — accents and punctuation removed.
Convert a headline or title into a clean, readable URL slug. The generator lower-cases the text, strips accents so café becomes cafe and über becomes uber, removes punctuation, and joins the remaining words with hyphens or underscores. A short, stable slug is easier to read in a search result, easier to share, and less likely to break when you later decide to rewrite the page title.
How to use the Slug Generator
- Paste or type your title into the box.
- Choose the separator — hyphens are the conventional choice for URLs.
- Optionally cap the length; slugs beyond about 60 characters get truncated in search results.
- Copy the generated slug from the output box.
Why people use it
- Blog and CMS URLs, where the title changes but the address should not.
- Removing accents and punctuation that break links in email clients.
- Keeping slugs short enough to stay readable when shared.
- Consistency — one convention across a whole site is far easier to maintain.
Frequently asked questions
Hyphens or underscores?
Hyphens. Search engines treat a hyphen as a word separator, while underscores are frequently read as joining words together, and Google's own guidance uses hyphens throughout its example URLs.
Should I change a slug after publishing?
Only with a permanent redirect in place. Changing a live slug without one breaks every existing link and discards whatever ranking that page had built up, which is a steep price for a tidier URL.
How does it handle accents and non-Latin text?
Accented Latin characters are transliterated to their plain equivalents, so façade becomes facade and Straße becomes strasse. Characters with no Latin equivalent are dropped, which is why a slug generated from a fully non-Latin title can come out empty — write that slug by hand instead.
