Frequently asked questions

Why does the location look wrong?

IP geolocation works at the level of the network, not the device. It typically resolves to your ISP's regional hub, which can be tens or hundreds of kilometres away, and VPN or mobile connections can be further off still.

Is an IP address personal data?

In most privacy regimes, yes — it is treated as personal data because it can single out a device. That is why the address is shown only to you here and never stored.

What is the difference between a public and a private IP?

Private addresses such as 192.168.x.x and 10.x.x.x only mean anything inside a local network. Your public address is what the internet actually sees, and it is assigned by your ISP.
